Chapter 22: Become intensely focused
Concentrate all your thoughts on the task at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.
—Alexander Graham Bell
Focus is one of the most important qualities you possess to make your dream a reality. Focus is your ability to channel your eyes and energy on a single task. From the time you wake up in the morning to the time you shut your eyes at night, your waking life has your focus somewhere. The question is where. What are you focusing on? What are you thinking about? What are you spending your energy on? Are the actions you’re taking each moment bringing you closer to goal completion or moving you further away? Recalibrate and redirect your thoughts and actions on the most important task at hand. Just like focusing a fire hose on a fire to put out the flames. Focus your energy on your goals to achieve and complete them.
For your dreams to get out of your head and become a reality, you will require focus. Focus is not easy; it’s hard work to focus in today’s day and age with all the distractions in our lives. We are bombarded daily with distractions from endless social media, endless websites, endless streaming services, endless escapism, and endless short-term pleasure. Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year we face endless distractions taking away from focus, from goal achieving, to tension relieving. You need to take control of your focus and direct its energy to your dreams, goals, plans, thoughts, and actions. Get your focus under control and away from time-consuming distractions, and put your focus on creating the life and lifestyle you dream about.
No one created anything worthwhile without focused attention
Look into the history of successful companies, and you will find the predictable story of the founder who first had an idea and a dream. They turned that idea into plans and worked on those plans for years and years with concentrated focus, never letting the focus of the vision fade. With focused attention on the dream and actions, that business eventually pushed out into the marketplace, expanded, and the rest was history. All companies start out as an idea and a dream. They grow into massive companies by focused attention on vision and action. People and companies only become successful because of the all-important factor – focus. Without focused attention on growth and expansion, ideas, dreams, people, and businesses die.
Your focus in the past is your present
If you had to rate your own focus on your goals and dreams, what would it be? Are you focusing on the right thing at the right time, or are you focusing on short-term pleasures and procrastination? Be honest with yourself and see that right now you could be living the life you want if you focused more intensely on your goals in the last five years. If you worked harder, longer, and smarter in the past, your present would be different. If you focused on investing in your future 10 years ago with wealth, knowledge, network, and experiences, there’s no telling where your present would be at. What if today, right now, you threw away the excuses manual and gave your next five years intense focus on your goals and dreams. Where will you be in five years if you focused on you?
Focus on squeezing action into today
Be aware of how you spend your waking hours. Keep a journal of the day, what time you wake up, what you do, where you go, the goals for the day, the distractions you face, the obstacles you overcome, and the work you get done. Keeping a daily journal brings self-awareness to the time you have and how you spend it. Do you create time for yourself to focus your attention on the important things in your life? Adjust your schedule to create chunks of time in your day to solely focus on completing the daily tasks that will bring your dream closer to reality. Focus squeezing action into your day, 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there every day add up to become days, weeks, and months solely focused on goal achievement and dream realisation.
When every physical and mental resource is focused, one’s power to solve a problem multiplies tremendously.
