Chapter 24: Work on your goals

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

—Confucius

Work is an activity that exerts physical or mental effort to achieve an objective or result. Many of us spend most of our time working for someone else’s dream and not enough time working on our own. Working at a job that is funding your boss’s lifestyle while you make a wage to live. Working at a job to provide and make a living is one thing, but working on your dreams to make you a success is another. Work hard on your job, yes, but don’t neglect working harder on yourself and your dreams. Your dreams, not your job, are the vehicle to your personal success. Go to work on your mind, your thoughts, your body, your goals, your relationships, your habits, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

You have certain strengths, talents, and gifts that you should be devoting time to in order to sharpen and improve. Be clear about your strengths, talents, and gifts. Dedicate your life to becoming the best version of yourself you possibly can be. Work on your passions, get up early, stay up late, and put the extra hours into work. As Elon Musk said, ‘Work like hell. If you put in 80 to 100 hours a week, every week, you will achieve in four months what it takes others a year to achieve.’ Demand more from yourself and put in the work. It’s the only obstacle that stands between your dreams and goals becoming a reality – work.

Turn work into a workout

By know you should know what your number one dream is and have written clear goals and broken them up into the actions and steps you need to take to achieve them. It’s important to note here that having the plan and working the plan are two different things. Taking action requires work, and really getting the best results in the shortest amount of time requires hard, consistent work and focus, just like a gym workout. You can either take your time and stroll through a workout or go in there hard and focused and get it done. Treat your days like a workout; when it’s time to do the necessary work and get the results you are after, work out like you are in the gym. Count the reps, lift the weight, do the sets and exercises, and go hard, then rest. Work hard on yourself every day, and keep kicking the ball a little every day down the road to success.

Work hard for the next 30 years

Your major work in life shouldn’t have an end date. It should be your life’s work and craft, what you do and who you are. If you worked hard for the next 30 years on yourself, your goals, your passions, your skills, and your strengths, what type of person would you become? How much positive change would you have brought to the people you came in contact with and the people around you? Think about who will benefit from all your hard work. Use this as motivation and a driving force to do good in the world, and let your life be a mission of servitude. You will work harder when you know your work is benefiting not only yourself but others.

Gary Vaynerchuk said, ‘Macro patience, micro speed’. Think long term, have patience, but also work your butt off every day. Having a long-term perspective and an intense focus on daily actions is the formula for success. Life is a trek of self-discovery with detours and roadblocks on the way to a destination of your imagination. Think of the place you will arrive at in 30 years, and work hard to get there. The old saying that it takes 10,000 hours of hard work to make an overnight success is true. Turn your dreams into plans, plans into actions, and actions into work, and work hard every day.

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn’t seem wonderful at all.

—Michelangelo
