Chapter 21: Make decisions
Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
Decisions, decisions, decisions. With each passing moment, we are confronted with small choices in life: what to do, where to go, what to think about, what to say, what to focus on, what to eat, what to watch, etc. It never ends. It’s the same as our thoughts coming and going, running through our mind thousands of times a day. We make thousands of little choices a day, and at the end of the day, looking back, those choices make our day what it is. Multiply that by 365 days, and your year is made up of hundreds of thousands of small decisions you made along the way. We barely give any conscious thought to these small choices and let our subconscious mind make decisions for us in our lives. The small daily decisions we make over time build up to be our lives, and our lives right at this moment are the result of all our decisions made or not made. Full stop, end of story.
Change your life through making decisions
You paint your life with the decisions you make, and you are always painting your future self with present decisions. In other words, you create your future life with the current decisions you make right now, as your life right now is a result of the accumulation of your past decisions. Take your body, for example. Your current body is a reflection of the choices you made with food and exercise. Your future body in, say, three years will be the reflection of the accumulated small decisions you will have made relating to food and exercise. Going through life on autopilot with no dreams, goals, or plans, you drift going anywhere and nowhere in particular, arriving at a place that is not anywhere from your best version of yourself.
Harnessing the power of decision-making and steering you on course to fulfil your dreams requires an honest self-introspection. Using the body as an example again, we can all understand because we all have one. Have you ever tried to lose weight? Have you ever got close to your goal weight and then found yourself drifting and ending up heavier than you have ever been? Have you ever stopped weighing yourself only to jump on the scales again to realise you put on all the weight you lost and more? What were the reasons behind this up-and-down yoyo?
If your plan is to lose weight, then follow these principles:
Step one
Make a final decision that you are serious about your health and body happiness. If you are unhealthy and overweight, chances are you aren’t truly happy with your body.
Step two
Find the ideal body weight and body image you want to be and maintain it. The number of kilos you need to lose to hit your ideal body weight. Give yourself a timeline with a date, and make a decision you will do what it takes to reach your goal by that date. Don’t be like the average people who say I want to lose some weight or I want to lose 10 kilos. Become a conscious decision maker and goal hitter.
Step three
You have the numbers. Where are you on the scales? Where do you want to be and by when?
Step four
You break the goal down into how much weight you need to lose each week, each month, each quarter.
Step five
Break down the actions you need to take such as exercise. How many times a week will you exercise? Get a coach or a personal trainer, a gym membership, a workout plan, and create a meal plan.
Step six
Decide to take massive action on your goal and do the work required to see it through. Along the journey to weight loss, you will encounter hundreds of times that require you to say yes and no to foods, exercise, moods, people, etc. By first making the decision that your health is your number one goal and not your fifth goal, you will automatically make the correct small decisions and you subconsciously align those decisions to hit that goal. You will stay on the path to goal achievement by harnessing the power of making a definite decision in your life.
The power of choice
With the power to choose also comes the power not to choose. You have the power right now to make new decisions and change the direction of your life. You can change your whole life by consciously deciding to shake off your old decisions and make new choices in your life. You can choose to wake up at 4.00am every day. You could quit your job and start a new one. You can choose to break it off with your partner and find a new one. You can choose to turn the TV off, read a book, work out, build a side business. You could.
You can choose your way through life, but majority won’t and don’t and leave their life on autopilot, playing out old accumulated habits. We live out our days by the past choices that have accumulated to our present reality. You can begin this year to radically shed yourself of everything and become a different person. Consciously choose to shed yourself of disempowering thoughts, actions, and habits that hold you back in life, and choose new thoughts, actions, and habits to create the best version of yourself. The power of free will is the power of choice, and it is in every minute of every day to use it. Go ahead and paint your life with decisions and choices to create the masterpiece that is your life.
Those who reach decisions promptly and definitely know what they want, and generally get it.
—Napoleon Hill
