Chapter 23: Always take action

Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

—Thomas Jefferson

Action is the ability to use your mind and body to shape your environment. You have been blessed with the power to use your mind and body to create through your actions. The creation process starts in the mind and is birthed through action. It all begins in your mind as a thought impulse that moves into reality through actions. You could say action is the outwards movement of our inner thoughts. If your actions determine your destiny, then it is your thoughts that determine your actions. Action is the car drives you to the future. The destination is predicated by the actions you take. You can dream, you can plan, you can learn, you can think, you can believe, but if you don’t act, nothing happens – nothing gets done without action.

Life doesn’t get better by wishing it gets better by acting. It gets better through action. You need to start practicing the habit of taking daily small actions that chip away at your goals. If you start taking daily small actions on your goals over the next five years, the actions you take will compound over that time and drive you to your destination, which is dream realisation and goal achievement. Most people go through life without goals and direction, so their daily actions become goalless and directionless, going around in circles instead of moving forwards.

Action and mathematics are very similar because they add up and multiply. For example, your goal is to read 25 books in the next 12 months, and the average book is approximately 250 pages. Do the math, 25 × 250 = 6,250 pages. This might seem like a massive number, but if you take 6,250 and divide it by 365 days, you only need to read 17 pages on average a day. This shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes. Everyone has 30 minutes in a day to work on their goals if they make it a priority.

Disciplined quality action

Action is the foundational key to all success.

Pablo Picasso

Most of our lives are taken up by our basic need to exist and function as human beings on earth. From sleeping, eating, working, socialising, grooming, resting, and everything else that fills our day. In our fast-paced world, 95% of our actions and reactions are automatic, unconscious responses to our physical and human environments. We only use about 5% of our spare time for disciplined quality action; the rest of the time we are on autopilot. To turn off autopilot in your life, start by breaking your major goals down into tasks, and then make time in your schedule to devote yourself to focus on disciplined quality action.

Once you start the habit of working on the important and urgent while dropping the unimportant and not urgent, you will realise how much time you have wasted in the past. Start increasing the amount of time you spend on disciplined quality action and less time on undisciplined, unimportant activities. Schedule time for disciplined quality action and make this a new habit. If you work consistently on your major goals, it’s just a matter of time before you realise your dreams.

Change your daily actions

Think back to your previous self from 10 years ago, and think about how much life has changed. What daily actions have you changed in your daily life in those 10 years? Do you do the same things you did 10 years ago? Do you think the same? Do you have the same circle of friends? Is your career different? What have you created or done over the past 10 years? Did any of this happen overnight, or did 10 years of change really take 3,650 days? You can agree that by looking back at your previous self, the one thing that changed everything was your daily actions. The actions you take daily are one of the only things you really have complete control over.

You can control what time you wake up. You can control what you eat, how you act, what you listen to, what you watch, what you read, and whom you socialise with. You can control how hard you work on yourself, your job, and your relationships. If you have the power to change what you do in a day, then you have the power to change your life, as life is made up only of days.

Start changing up your daily routine and get outside your comfort zone. Get into the growth zone by doing the things you know you should be doing when you should do it, no excuses. Throw the excuses manual in the bin, and make each day a winner. Move the needle forwards every day, and edge a little closer to your goals.

The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions.

—Confucius
