WHAT IS SPICER CAPITAL? MY INVESTMENT JOURNEY: A BRIEF HISTORY
My passion for investing started when I made my first stock trade at the age of 12 (my mother kindly took my orders). My mom let me get the Wall Street Journal to study the pricing tables. At 21, I purchased my first rental property—I remember excusing myself from my FINN 4133 Advanced Investments class to make the bid-winning call. In 2010, I graduated from the University of Arkansas with a B.S.B.A. in Finance; I began working for Northwestern Mutual.
In 2012, I qualified for Million Dollar Round Table for the first time, an exclusive association representing the top 1% of the industry. A year later, I earned my Certified Financial Planner™ designation. The following two years were a critical period of disappointing discovery (despite earning two more industry designations)… I came to realize that my personal investment strategy was incongruent with what I was supposed to, or even allowed to, recommend. I became increasingly uncomfortable with the industry-prescribed advice.
I left my job on December 31, 2015 and lived off savings as I researched desperately to build a better way—for myself, for my family, for anyone who shares my concerns. Unafraid to challenge the traditional paradigms of a broken system, I built Spicer Capital to address my clients (and my own) investment and financial planning concerns. I know it’s cliché—but, anyone who knows me well will confirm—I am driven by my growing family. I married my brilliant high school sweetheart, and we have three amazing boys. My search for a better way to invest was initially inspired by my desire to care for them. It’s probably just human-nature, but I feel compelled to protect my family (including financially) no matter what happens! I know there are others who feel the same. For you, I hope to be a resource.
